Spring Break!

We woke today at 4am in the morning to take a flight to Cancun, connecting through Calgary. It’s been a long 2 years of no flying for everyone due to Covid. I know even just saying that makes us sound so spoiled and priviledged. It’s the kids who are spoiled. I don’t think they’ve gone a year without actually flying somewhere for vacation since they were born. But we try to remind them every trip, every meal at night how lucky they are. There’s only so much you can do without making them not feel guilty everyday for the life they have. Not to mention they are now worrying about the war in Ukraine. Anyway, we got sick in December and we were like, ok that sucked but that’s out ticket out of here! We’ve all been sick, all will be doubled or triple vaxxed, and decided to book a trip with the kids to get them away from all this worrying. Basically we bet that by now, Covid would no longer be the story, and we would have maybe 2-3mos until a potential next variant. It’s now March and all mask mandates will be lifted, so I think we made the right bet! (Unfortunately, not the case for 0 covid policy countries.) The war was unexpected, but as the next selfish person would say, there’s always a war happening somewhere in the world. If anything, it’s made me think YOLO (you only live once), anything can happen tomorrow.

Our uber ride came at 4:30 and the kids eagerly woke up to get ready. We were lucky enough to have access to the AC lounge and were able to have a quick breakfast before we boarded. The kids were easy on the 1 hr flight to Calgary. But the next flight to Cancun just seemed to much longer! Connor’s been such a nice boy lately. He helped a lot with carrying the luggage and just asking more questions about why we do certain things during flights. He’s growing up to be such a nice boy. Here’s him and Isla being excited and walking through the gates.

Our flight to Calgary was pretty empty

We finally arrived in Cancun! Our shuttle service was there right on time, and it took about 1.5 hours to get to our resort at Bahia Principe Grand Tulum. If you have ever tried to research on Mexican all inclusives, there are a million of them. So we stuck to ones with reviews from friends who’ve been. Christina’s friend was just here so that was a perfect recommendation!

Landed!

Taken by the shuttle driver.. lol

We got to the hotel and the check-in process was easy since we already checked in online. Kids were happy but thought it was humid, and it is! A shuttle took us to our rooms.

Our room is awesome! It’s one of the nicest rooms we’ve ever stayed at. It is huge, and nice separation between us and the kids. The kids pool is also right outside which is great! Hopefully it’s not too loud.

Our first stop was dinner since we hadn’t ate. We went to the buffet and it was just ok. The kids of course only wanted fries but at least Isla had some cauliflower and fish.

We got the kids back in the room and washed them up for the night. It was still early relative to PST so Wes and I went to check out the rest of the resort while the kids enjoyed their devices in the room. The resort isn’t huge mostly restaurants and pools. There isn’t much to do at night. there is a “food truck” that is open 24 hrs I think, and we ended up bringing some hotdogs an baked potato back for the kids. There are small racoons here that hang out at the food areas like stray dogs! They are actually quite cute!
